Has Philosophy Lost It's Way?

An interesting article in the New York Times. (Thanks to David Agronin for the pointer).

I found this article rather interesting as well. After reading it I started to think about our discussion at the end of class on Thursday. We talked about how academic journals that try to combine Eastern philosophical perspectives with Western philosophical perspectives are often viewed as less than reputable in comparison to their strictly Western counterparts. The common objection to these journals is that 'there is no argument, there is no view'. This article made me question that objection. I understand the need for gritty, philosophical meat but I'm not so sure that this justifies delegitimizing any journal that is not 'proper' philosophy. For example, I read a journal article in Asian Philosophy about the Buddhist take on Ryle's refutation of Cartesian dualism and there seemed to be ample philosophical meat. Anyways, it got me thinking and I just thought I would put my thoughts out there.

Best,

Joe
